NEWSSTAND PROTOTYPE
New York, NY

The newsstand can no longer exist as a fragile house of cards. It must be both a fortress, hiding its contents in the dark of night, and an exhibition space for its glamorous and shocking cover stories by day. This winning entry in the Newsstand 88 national design competition is conceived as a mechanism, called “Newsbox,” whereby a vendor can display wares in a moveable case. A pair of structural columns anchor the composition, functioning as large hinge pins. The display cases can rotate into opened or closed positions. The roof consists of a folded sandwich of stainless steel sheets attached to the columns. This design was featured in Oculus and in the September 8, 1988 edition of The New YorkTimes, and was exhibited at the Knoll Gallery and New York City Hall.

PARKING FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
Atlanta, GA

At the selected site, directly adjacent to the Georgia Dome, massive retaining walls define the perimeter of an existing earthen cut. The clean, geometric forms of the oval dome and the nearby pyramidal roof of the World Congress Center suggest a merging of volumetric gesture with the existing topographic conditions of the site. The deep hollow carved into the ground articulates verticality and confines the space without confining it. From within the crater, the horizon exists just at its perimeter, with the sports arena filling up the eased edge along the northern face. The heights of the light standards establish a horizontal datum that is juxtaposed to the rather gentle slope of the grade. These lights are topped with low sloped hipped roofs, are covered with vegetation, and possess a certain degree of formal ambiguity. The center of the space opens up to the maximum volume, while the perimeter is articulated by a series of compressed events of some unknown origin – a sphere, a series of flag poles, a wrinkle and a spiral in the mounded earth. This scheme was an entry for one of three designated sites in the national design competitionfor “Public Space in the New American City” devised on the occasion of the 1996 Summer Olympic games in Atlanta. For this competition, Whitney Powers collaborated with sculptor Herb Parker.
