Marion Square encompasses 7.5 acres in the heart of one the America’s most distinguished historic districts. It figured prominently in the history of Charleston. Once the location of the city’s outer wall during Indian days, the site had been a public park and parade ground since 1833. Overtime it had become nothing more than a level, featureless field bounded by perimeter trees and containing a handful of historical monuments. To reestablish Marion Square as a significant, dynamic element equally at home with Charleston’s historic context and the city’s contemporary urban fabric. Studio A assembled a talented, multi-discipline team to win a national competition for the park’s redevelopment. Under the leadership of Cambridge, Mass. landscape architect Michaelan Valkenburgh this team transformed Marion Square into a elegant urban oasis which was both restrained in its design elements and engaging to the public.
